Mainline
A core entry in a series — the numbered, story-and-mechanics games people mean when they name the franchise.

Spin-off
A game set in a franchise's world but built around a different genre or idea (racing, party games, puzzles) rather than the core experience.

Remaster
The same game with improved graphics, resolution, or performance — not rebuilt, just polished.

Remake
A game rebuilt from scratch on new technology. Same story and characters, but new assets and often reworked controls.

Compilation
A bundle that packages several older games together in one release. It's a collection, not a new entry.
